It ain’t heavy, but it’s still clutter…

After a manic week I’ve not yet got round to the big wardrobe clear out,  we’re all human aren’t we? My last blog said it’s okay to say no to things sometimes so I’ll practice what I preach!

Having said that, I haven’t lost the spark for what I am trying to achieve here and I have plenty of other things to talk about. All is not lost, the suitcase for my little trip in June is coming out of the loft soon so maybe I can fit in a little wardrobe sort out whilst I start packing.

Did I mention I am going to Disney?… I am going to Disney! I can’t wait and one of the biggest achievements for this is that it’s all paid for, nothing on credit and the spending money for whilst I am there has even been saved up too.

Every Penny Counts

I have been following a clear budgeting plan for a couple of months now and I can’t believe what I have managed to achieve in that time. I have saved up for Disney and paid off a credit card that had been used to buy football season tickets. I would never have been able to do that before.

I have been using a website called EveryDollar, and basically you plan what you are doing with every single penny that comes in each month… then stick to it.

The website shows transactions in Dollars, this isn’t a problem as I just treat the Dollar symbol as a Pound. The only negatives are that the app isn’t available in the UK and we aren’t able to access the website via mobile or tablet either. This restricts me to doing my budgeting each day on my lunch hour at work, or having to turn on the laptop at home. It is worth it but I am on the hunt for a UK equivalent as I am desperate for something like this as an app – to be able to track my entire budget on the go would be a complete lifesaver. I have already planned for every single penny in June, this includes saving up for things like new tyres for the car and my next holiday. Planning ahead is the key!

EveryDollar also gives tips on how to tackle any debt (using the snowball method) and plan long term for your entire life ahead if you wanted to take it that far.

It ain’t heavy, but it’s still clutter…

I am guilty as charged that the physical clear out of stuff has been on hold this week and this blog was published later than I wanted it to be. Sometimes I just feel tired… don’t we all?! I wanted to keep up the momentum though and I’ve tackled some digital mess instead. I think that in this day and age we can amount a mass of ‘digital clutter’ and personally I find it as overwhelming and stressful as physical clutter… it’s just a little bit easier to ignore, until you next log on at least!

I managed to completely empty one of my email inboxes, that had over 1500 unread emails in it – gulp. As I was going through the mailbox I made sure to unsubscribe to all the pointless junk mail and I used the KonMari method to do this… can you guess how many email subscriptions sparked joy? – none, zero, zilch!! I have unsubscribed from them all. The mailbox is still empty now. I am not jumping up and down just yet though. This mailbox was my least used of two personal accounts I own, I have still got to tackle my main account but I will do it, and it will feel amazing.

Recharging my ‘Battery’

The last of my accomplishments this week is that I now have a minimalist mobile phone. Don’t get me wrong, I still have apps, I couldn’t live without some of them these days but they are no longer screaming in my face every time I look at my phone. Reducing time spent on my phone has been a big thing for me lately and I will probably talk more about this at some point. I felt like as my battery was draining, the life was draining out of me alongside it! My main screen is now clear apart from my phone, messages, calendar and email icon… I love it and I chose a calming wallpaper to top it off nicely. If I want Facebook and so on, I have to look for it. It’s much less tempting this way.

I feel like I have touched the surface on quite a few topics this time, and I could go on and on about each of them easily. Maybe I could cover each in a separate blog.. now there’s an idea.

No one ever truly feels like they have everything under control… do they?
